About this edition
This limited edition is a newly typeset reconstruction of the Latin Malleus Maleficarum, collated from multiple sixteenth-century printed sources and modelled on the typographic structure of the 1669 Lyon edition, the last major historical printing before the work passed out of regular circulation. Every copy ships with a digital PDF of the English translation, so the Latin volume can be read alongside a modern text.
Woodcuts, ornamental initials, printer's devices, and marginalia have been drawn from period sources, restored, and returned to their historical places within the text. Where original material was damaged or no longer extant, equivalent ornaments and cuts from the same printing tradition were selected in order to preserve the visual language of the early editions.
The result is a careful reconstruction of the book as a printed object. Its structure, ornament, and typographic character have been preserved, while the text has been newly set throughout in typefaces modeled on sixteenth- and seventeenth-century sources.
Bound in black leatherette over 3 mm boards, the volume has a rounded spine with five raised bands. The spine is blind-debossed with papal keys, title, and date, while the front board bears a deep ox-blood cross. Each copy is housed in a matching black leatherette clamshell case with blind-debossed titling and an ox-blood satin lining.
