Frequently Asked Questions

Our Editions

What is the difference between your editions?

Most of our titles are released in up to three editions. The Codex Edition is our flagship collectible line: Smyth-sewn, printed on archival stock, bound in specialty coverings with a slipcase. The Artefact Edition is a numbered limited edition with premium materials and exclusive features. The Binder’s Edition is hand-bound in leather in a very small number of copies, signed and numbered, with a certificate of authenticity.

Each book's page lists exactly what its editions include. Browse the books.

What is the John Dee Necronomicon?

The John Dee Necronomicon is our edition of the legendary grimoire, designed as a faithful 16th-century English translation attributed to the occultist John Dee. Inspired by the Lovecraftian mythos and early modern esoterica, it blends historical authenticity with cosmic horror, down to its period typography, deckled pages, and woodcut-style illustrations.

Is the Necronomicon Artefact Edition still available?

The Artefact Edition, produced for our 2024 Kickstarter campaign and limited to 1,000 numbered copies, is now out of print and will not be reprinted. The Codex Edition is in stock.

Is the Necronomicon a real historical text?

The Necronomicon is a fictional creation of H. P. Lovecraft, but our edition is designed as if it were real, a lost translation discovered in John Dee’s archives. It uses 16th-century English, woodcut-style illustrations, and period typography to immerse readers in the illusion of authenticity.

How do I check my copy’s number?

Numbered editions can be verified at validate.theobsidiancodex.com. Enter your PledgeBox purchase ID, your Shopify order number, or the validation code supplied with your book to confirm its number, edition and authenticity.

Do you use AI in your publications?

With the exception of the John Dee Necronomicon, which began as a non-commercial hobby project, we do not use AI in our production. All artwork and text is commissioned.
