About this edition

The Artefact Edition is limited to 750 copies. The book is bound in black cloth, with a design on the front board inspired by the first edition, third printing, commonly known as the Neely Edition, itself based on an illustration by Robert W. Chambers. The Chaosium Yellow Sign and the title appear in silver foil on the spine.

It is presented in a black cloth-covered clamshell case, with Chaosium’s Yellow Sign debossed in gold foil on the lid, and features a dust jacket illustrated by Javier Prado.

The edition also includes a cloth-bound hardcover of The King in Yellow: A Tragedy in Two Acts, together with a pamphlet edition of Ambrose Bierce’s An Inhabitant of Carcosa.

Interior art is by Earl Geier, with additional commissioned artwork by Seung Gue Lee, Javier Prado, JP Aguirre, and Arturo Velasco, whose work also appears inside the clamshell case.

Printed by traditional lithography on archival, acid-free paper and typeset in Adobe Caslon Pro, 11 pt, the text block is Smyth-sewn for durability and finished with bespoke endpapers, black and yellow headbands, and a ribbon marker.

About the companion play

The King in Yellow: A Tragedy in Two Acts was newly written as the script for the reputed 1895 London staging at the Théâtre Orpheon. It was developed with playwright John Anderson and refined in consultation with Kenneth Hite, Pete Rawlik, Bridgette Brenmark, and Rune Småbråten. Styled after late nineteenth-century theatre editions, it is printed on archival, cream-shaded uncoated stock with era-appropriate typography.
